About the Coach
Tobias Salkeld, National Candidate Master
I’m Tobias Salkeld, a National Candidate Master with over a decade of competitive chess experience and I've coached dozens of students of all ages and levels. I help chess players improve fast and win more games within the first 8 weeks.
When I was 9, I fell in love with the game of chess. I started playing as much as I could against my dad, my younger brother, and my friends. Soon, I could beat all of them, so I began playing online as well and improved rapidly. Later that year, my brother and I entered our first tournament, the Saskatchewan Scholastic Provincial Championship. Amazingly, we both won our age group, and got to represent our province at the National level!
Over the next several years, I continued to improve and play tournaments. I devoured hundreds if not thousands of chess books, puzzles, YouTube videos, and online lessons. Some of them were helpful and instructive, but others felt like a waste of time. Living in Saskatchewan, I didn't have any strong players or coaches around to guide me. I got stuck many times, and often felt like further improvement was impossible. Eventually, after 10 years of dedication, I finally achieved my first Chess Master title!
My mission as a coach is to be a guide for players in the same situation I was as a kid. I've learned through long experience which training methods actually work, and I've designed a program that combines master-level guidance, friendly competition, and weekly consistency to help players fast-track their improvement, and win more chess games within the first 8 weeks!
